Lightning Strike Countermeasures

Electrical equipment such as PCs and other types of computing equipment may malfunction and lose data or be damaged in case of a power outage or a momentary voltage drop. Commercially available UPS (uninterruptible power system) and other protective devices can be used to counter such risks.

If there has been a lightning strike nearby, this may affect the electrical wiring in your home and cause damage to electrical equipment and appliances. To prevent lightning strikes from damaging appliances, you must not only turn them off but also unplug them from outlets. However, even if disconnected, damage can still occur via telephone lines, antenna lines and similar. The use of commercially available electrical taps with lightning surge protectors and similar protective equipment can be helpful, but it may not be enough in case of a direct lightning strike.
